Members of a scheduled tribe family were severely thrashed, head of the family was shot at and their house was set ablaze when some boys of the family did not pay respect to the village sarpanch's brother by standing up. The incident took place in Damoh district on Tuesday night.
The head of the family Chandu Adivasi sustained gunshot injuries in his back and injuries in his head when hit by sticks.
The sarpanch's brother got furious when Chandu's minor sons did not stand up to pay respect when he was passing by the house at village Arora Jamunia under Hindoriya police station. He later returned with his goons, thrashed the family members and set their house afire.
SDO (police) Pathariya ML Verma told mediapersons that on Diwali night, village sarpanch Hakam Yadav's brother Santosh Yadav was going to his friend's house. On his way, he was passing by Chandu Adivasi's house where Chandu's sons were playing cards in the verandah.
Santosh stopped and vent his ire on the boys for not standing up. On hearing Santosh abusing the boys, Chandu came out of the house and apologised to Santosh on their behalf. However, the sarpanch's brother abused him too and left. Later, he returned to Chandu's house with eight armed people and thrashed the family. One of them allegedly fired at Chandu with a country-made pistol and set the house afire.
Chandu with injuries in his head and back was rushed to Damoh district hospital. Others who sustained injuries include Chandu's wife, two sons and two cousins.
The police have lodged a case under sections 307, 147, 148, 436, 452 of IPC against Santosh Yadav, Dilip, Vijay and six others. They all are absconding.
