A few days back, Shreya Naik, a 19-year-old college student from Andheri, reportedly beat up a man who tried to molest her near her house. Naik had learnt martial arts at a self-defence training centre that is run by Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray.

“We all are proud of Shreya for doing what she has done. Our endeavour is to make more girls self-dependent, as far as their safety is concerned,” says Akshay Kumar.

Women are trained for free at this centre. Now, Akshay, who is back in the country, has decided to felicitate Shreya for her brave act.

An insider close to the actor says, “Akshay had a long meeting with his team to finalise the details of the felicitation ceremony, which will take place in four or five days at the Andheri Sports Complex. Akshay feels felicitating her is also going to inspire other girls to fight off such men to protect themselves.”

When contacted, the actor confirmed the news, and said,“We are planning a programme to honour the young girl. This is very important, as it will give other girls the confidence to face such situations bravely. We all are proud of Shreya for doing what she has done. Our endeavour is to make more girls self-dependent, as far as their safety is concerned.”

The exact date of the event will be finalised in a day or two. “Akshay and Aaditya plan to open similar martial arts training centres in other parts of Maharashtra as well. The idea is to reach out to as many women as possible,” adds the insider.
