Director Sriram Raghavan seems to be back in his comfort zone in the first trailer for AndhaDhun, a darkly humorous thriller that combines the noir style of his earlier films, Johnny Gaddaar and Ek Hasina Thi. Ayushmann Khurrana plays a blind pianist who gets embroiled in a murder mystery.
The trailer introduces each of the characters and lays out the premise to the best of its ability. Ayushmann’s pianist feels himself falling for the omnipresent Radhika Apte’s character. But when he is introduced to Tabu’s bored, rich housewife (and femme fatale), things begin to unravel.
It is implied that Tabu (or perhaps someone else) is murdered, and Ayushmann’s character is the only witness —or, as Agatha Christie would have described him, a Blind Witness.
The trailer’s jazzy background music (it’s still unclear if this is a part of Amit Trivedi’s score) sets the tone for the film, as do the slightly stylised acting choices of the main cast. This isn’t a realistic film, but it isn’t entirely fantastical as well.
Speaking about how they chose the title for the film — and the hidden pun within it — Ayushmann said at the recent IIFA Awards ceremony, “We were contemplating a lot of titles and though Sriram Raghavan was happy with another title but we always had a plan for a Hindi title. ‘AndhaDhun’ is kind of a pun. It is not ‘andhadhund’ but ‘andha dhun’ (which roughly translates to ‘the blind tune’),” he said.
Produced by Viacom 18 and Matchbox Picture, AndhaDhun has been scheduled for an October 5 release.
