Bindu would love to make a comeback but only with good roles

A day before the veteran actor turned 65, Radio Nasha 91.9 FM celebrated her career by playing music from her films on April 16.

She started her acting career at the age of 12 with Anpadh (1962). After that, Bindu went on to prove her versatility with several films like Kati Patang (1970), Abhimaan (1973), and Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), among others.

However, since Mehbooba (2008), Bindu has not signed any new films. “I would love to make a comeback. But I want to do good roles. I keep getting offers for small roles, but I don’t want to do those. I have played many important characters, so I don’t want to compromise now. I don’t feel the need to do a film just for the heck of it,” says the veteran actor, who turned a year older on April 17. To pay tribute to her, Radio Nasha 91.9 FM aired excerpts of an interview with her, as well as songs from her hit films, all day on April 16.

Even though she has essayed diverse characters in her career, Bindu was famous for her dancing skills. Looking back, she says she was inspired by Helen. “When I used to do cabaret sequences in films, the first name that used to come to my mind was Helen’s. I even told her this the day I met her,” she says.

The actor also reveals that she was disappointed with the makers of Queen (2014). “I was angry... They used my song, ‘Hungama ho gaya’, and didn’t do anything we did in the original. Kuch toh hamare jaisa karna chahiye tha (they should have done something similar to what we did),” she says.

As far as the films today are concerned, Bindu says she loved watching Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015). “Bajirao is proof of what a good director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is. I loved Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance in Bajrangi Bhaijaan too.”
