Bollywood releases: what you should expect this week
Hours before the film releases and a day before the reviews appear, here’s what you can expect from this week’s release(s)…bollywood Updated: May 24, 2013 14:57 IST
Better late than never? Not always
Film: Ishkq In Paris
Cast: Preity Zinta (last seen in Heroes; 2008), Rhehan Malliek (last seen in Kajraare; 2010) and Isabelle Adjani (Bollywood debut)
Plot: Akash (Rhehan) and Ishkq (Preity) decide to spend one day together in Paris, frolicking, singing songs and flirting. Then they part ways, only to meet many years later, when Akash realises he actually has feelings for Ishkq, but since she’s always acted like she’s too cool for him, she’s conflicted. Or something like that.
Director: Prem Raj (debut directorial) He has previously directed Main Aur Mrs Khanna (2010). He’s also been credited for writing additional screenplay for the disaster called Love Story 2050 (2008).
Since director Prem Raj went on record calling Salman Khan his mentor, Preity did her bit and roped in the star for a special number, ‘Kudiye di kurti’. The soundtrack, since its release, has become dated and been forgotten.
This movie, which is also being touted as Preity’s ‘comeback’ film, reportedly has moments inspired by her life and the director’s. And from the actor’s PR officer as well, apparently. All for promotions, promotions for all!
Preity makes her debut as a producer with this film; or more like, she’s been trying to do so, as the film just doesn’t seem to want to be released. It was initially set to release in September 2012. The film’s promotional drive, since then, has been resurrected, then collapsed and now resurrected again.
If the lack of wit in this film doesn’t sweep you off your feet — “Indian ho, Indian hi raho, don’t try to be so French, okay!” — then the dialogue writer, trying too hard to be funny, just might: She says, “Tum Yash Chopra ki filmein bahut dekhte ho na?” and then, he says, “Aur tum Kill Bill dekhti ho?” We’re not even talking about the reported similarity that many have noticed between this film and the plot of Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004).
Launchdad hard at work
Film: Hum Hai Raahi Car Ke
Cast: Dev Goel (Bollywood debut), Adah Sharma (last seen in Phhir; 2011), Sanjay Dutt (last seen in Zila Ghaziabad), Anupam Kher (last seen in Chashme Baddoor) and Juhi Chawla (last seen in Main Krishna Hoon)
Plot: Two best friends — one of whom likes grinning excessively and smelling his own underwear for some reason, in a scene — head out on a road trip that goes utterly wrong, due to a series of foreseen instances that are interspersed with lots of not-so-funny jokes.
Director: Jyotin Goel (Last directed Bird Idol; 2010) Jyotin Goel wrote this animation film with his son, Dev Goel. Before which, he has worked with Sanjay Dutt in almost all the films he has directed — Safari (1999), Zahreelay (1990) and Inaam Dus Hazaar (1987). Incidentally, he has worked with Juhi Chawla in two of those movies.
Music: Siddharth Haldipur
We don’t think so.
Sanjay apparently pulls former foe Ram Gopal Varma’s leg in a dialogue in this film. He makes fun of his movie, RGV Ki Aag (2007). We’re still baffled at how you can make fun of a film that’s already a joke.
Considering this is the first Sanjay Dutt film to release after the actor has surrendered, his fans are looking forward to watching him on the big screen.
Apart from a funny cop (Sanjay Dutt), whose comic avatar will come as a big relief to his fans (keeping in mind recent developments), the promo only gives us a glimpse of how little Dev can act. His overenthusiastic tone of delivering dialogue just might secure him a spot on late night TV adverts.
For the final verdict, look out for Sarit Ray’s review tomorrow in the Watch & Listen page of Hindustan Times Do! section.
