"The film has released in 10 screens across two cities — Cairo and Alexandria. It has found phenomenal success across international markets, but what is really great is to see it find resonance and wide releases in non-traditional territories."

After making inroads into new markets such as Peru, Morocco, Israel, France and Germany, Shah Rukh Khan’s last release, Chennai Express, has now hit theatres in Egypt.

"The film has released in 10 screens across two cities — Cairo and Alexandria. It has found phenomenal success across international markets, but what is really great is to see it find resonance and wide releases in non-traditional territories,” says Amrita Pandey, executive director of the Indian studio that co-produced the film.

Incidentally, the SRK-starrer, My Name is Khan (2010), was the last Hindi film that was shown in Egypt before the country imposed an indefinite ban on the release of any foreign films following the political turmoil there. Antoine Zeind, who handles the film’s distribution in Egypt, says, “It is heartening to announce that Indian films are back with a bang in theatres here. Hindi film stars and their films are very popular among Egyptians.”
