After all that she has been through to merely release Padmaavat, even the smallest victories ask for celebrations but this one is quite massive. The Deepika Padukone starrer is now the most successful film of her decade-long career.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film surpassed the business of Chennai Express, Rs 208 crore (domestic figures), earlier this week with a collection of Rs 236 crore. What makes the success even bigger is that Padmaavat featured Deepika as the lead star, making it the only female-led film in the country to enter the Rs 200 crore club.

To thank her fans and industry experts for their supportive comments, Deepika posted a video on Twitter. The short clip compiles words of praise from several media outlets and trade analysts, calling her the “Queen of Bollywood” and congratulating her for the film’s success.

Deepika plays the queen of Chittor, Rani Padmavati in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali epic. It was scheduled for a December 1 release which was pushed by almost two months due to nationwide protests against the films. Outfits such as the Karni Sena demanded a ban on the film for ‘maligning’ the queen’s image, showing a romantic relationship between her and Alauddin Khilji and misrepresenting history. Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh had also banned the film from release until the Supreme Court intervened. Despite the court calling the ban ‘illegal,’ several theatre associations refused to release the film in the four states.

Despite the effective ban, Padmavati released everywhere else on January 25 to lukewarm critic reviews but a highly positive reaction from the audience. It made Rs 100 crore in the first four days of the release itself.

The film also stars Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor and is the highest-grossing film of their careers as well.
