Every actor looks the same on television these days: Navneet Nishan
Navneet Nishan says she doesn’t want to work just for the sake of it; adds that making jewellery and painting keep her busy and happy
Actor Navneet Nishan, who turned 51 last week, says she feels wonderful about the fact that people still remember her hit ’90s TV show, Tara. “It was an urban show and the boldness of the concept worked.
We had no competition back then, so it was easy to catch people’s attention. Today, it would be impossible to make a show like that. It is claimed (by channels) that people want to see the kind of shows that are currently on air. Those are not my cup of tea,” she says.
Navneet, who has been acting for 28 years, will soon be seen in a comedy show that also stars Kanwaljeet Singh. “There are many farcical comedies on TV these days, but no one attempts a real comedy. What I love about this show is that it has a love story about older people,” she adds.
It appears Navneet is still in high demand. Producers have been approaching her to act in TV shows regularly. However, the actor doesn’t want to work just for the sake of it. “When one keeps refusing projects, people get fed up and don’t come to you with offers. But with God’s grace, I keep getting offers. I’ve been offered many shows that have been on air for many years, but they didn’t click with me, so I turned them down. I worked on a few shows, but I was so unhappy. I also make jewellery and paint, so I have other ways to make myself happy and to earn money,” she says.
Navneet says she is very particular about the way she looks on screen. The actor says she styles herself and chooses her own jewellery, as she doesn’t like “the typical look one sees in serials”. She feels “everyone looks the same with a cookie-cutter look”.
The actor’s style is defined by her short hair, which has been part of her image for most of her career. Navneet admits that she tried growing out her locks, but felt that she didn’t look like herself. “I got fed up and I went back to my short hair, as I am happiest with it,” she says.
It turns out the style was fashioned just before Navneet met the makers of Tara. She had cut her hair right before the meeting and had asked the makers what kind of wig they wanted her to wear for the role, but they loved her look. “I couldn’t believe it. No actor back then had short hair on screen. But they were sure that it would become a rage, and it did. I was apprehensive, but I went with their conviction and it paid off,” she says.
The actor is currently seen in SAB TV’s Dil Deke Dekho.
