Positive word of mouth and good reviews seem to have done the trick. Gangs Of Wasseypur II, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Huma Qureshi in lead, has collected Rs 8.9 crore so far. The movie had made Rs 3 crore on day 1.
"Gangs of Wasseypur 2 made an approx 3.60 Crores on it's 1st Friday at the box office. The film seems to be catching up and the weekend is expected to turn things around for the movie. Having made 0.30 Crores via paid previews, 2.80 Crores on Day 1, 2.20 Crores on Day 2, Gangs of Wasseypur 2 now stands at 8.90 Crores," reports Koimoi.com.
"Gangs of Wasseypur 2 opened to an average occupancy of about 30% across the country. The occupancy was higher in metros and lower in non urban areas. Needless to say the 1st day collections of sequel was less than Gangs of Wasseypur. The total collection of Gangs of Wasseypur so far is about 3 Crores," says Koimoi.com.
"Though it's opening weekend was a mere 10 crores, the collections didn't fall badly over the weekdays as a result of which this Anurag Kashyap film enjoyed collections to the tune of 17.5 crores as the first week came to a close. Such sustenance at the box office means that the film would now be a coverage affair at the least and also a matter of prestige for the entire team since it would bring Part II with much more gusto. The stage has been set for the film's sequel and it should do much better," Joginder Tuteja writes about the collections of Gangs of Wasseypur 1.
'Tiger' scare for 'Wasseypur'
"Though the film is picking up at the box office unfortunately it won't last there for long. With the release of Ek Tha Tiger next week all movies are expected to be washed off the box office. Gangs of Wasseypur 2 would have definitely earned more had it chosen another release date. The film's lifetime collections will not be more than 18-19 Crores," reports the trade website.
Agrees trade expert Taran Adarsh: "With #EkThaTiger arriving on Wed, the screen space of #GOW2 will be reduced considerably. So it has to accumulate before Wed."
HT's review of Gangs of Wasseypur II
Gangs of Wasseypur II is less like a movie sequel, more like the season finale of an ongoing (and admittedly, engaging) TV series. Part I had no real ending. The death of Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee) was the sort of crucial juncture you expect the next episode to pick up from. In Part II, there's no need for a long-drawn establishment of premise, with characters whose stories play out in fast forward. This one isn't slow. There's just less motion blur.
CRITICS' VERDICT: Gangs of Wasseypur 2 more gripping than Part 1
Director, Anurag Kashyap's culmination to this gang-saga is as bloody as the first (if not more); yet it's an easier watch. The storyline of GOW 2 surges forth much faster as the new generation of gangsters, gun for each other with greater viciousness, feel critics.
@JalapathyG: Gangs of Wasseypur 2: Has lyricism, visual splendor, strong characterizations and dark humor. First half is terrific. Second half drags on.
