Cricketer Yuvraj Singh and his mother, Shabnam Singh, might have amused some by misspelling the Prime Minister’s name when, on Thursday, they invited Narendra Modi for Yuvi’s wedding, but the seven-minute meeting still holds lovely memories, they say. The 34-year-old will marry British-Mauritian actor Hazel Keech, 29, in Chandigarh on November 30.

Photos of the two at the Parliament flashed on social media sites even as the meeting was on. “We’ve invited Modiji for the reception in Delhi on December 7. We carried a box of dry fruits and chocolates with the wedding card,” said Shabnam.

Sharing high points, she added: “The best part was when he told me he’s also from Panchkula (near Chandigarh). He was my neighbour, and he said he has lived there for five years. He was very excited to share this with us.”

What did the PM have to say to groom-to-be Yuvi? “He was very happy for my son and asked him about his health and how he was doing now. He expressed his concern when Yuvi was not well and shared how he used to send messages to him through social media.”

In 2011, Yuvraj was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his left lung. He successfully underwent chemotherapy in Boston and Indianapolis, and returned to India in April 2012.

Shabnam also shared that Modi remembered meeting Yuvraj during 2011 World Cup. “They were remembering the time when Modi Ji had given Man of the Match title to Yuvi in Gujarat after 2nd Quarter-Final match between India and Australia in March 2011.”

Meanwhile, Yuvi’s father, Yograj Singh, says he won’t go to the wedding as he doesn’t believe in ‘deras’. He will only attend the reception at a hotel where he has been “respectfully invited.”
