It’s raining A-rated promos in Bollywood

These days, everything in Bollywood is ‘adult’. After the promos of Ekta Kapoor’s Kya Super Kool Hain Hum and Mahesh Bhatt’s Jism 2 got an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification, the latest to join the list is Madhur Bhandarkar’s much-hyped Kareena Kapoor starrer, Heroine. But, the makers are not crying over not being able to air these on TV, for they are having a big party online.
In fact, the makers of Heroine have made three different cuts of the trailer, to suit different norms and audiences. “We have changed Hindi words like ‘r***i’ (prostitute) to ‘item’ for our U/A trailer. Plus, the cigarette-smoking scene has been blurred. The love-making sequences have also been cut down,” says the movie’s spokesperson.
When the promo of Pooja Bhatt’s Jism 2, starring porn actor Sunny Leone, got an A-certificate, she lashed out: “Absolutely refuse to pare my scheduled trailer down to pander to an over cautious Censor board. Will release promo on the internet.” Result: the promos are a hit anyway, TV or no TV.
Kya Superkool... producer Tanuj Garg says, “The laws that govern our board need to change with time. People too want to see the real thing, which is why the ‘A’ promos released online are a big hit.”
The Censor Board, meanwhile, is mulling online action too. “There is only a marginal change (in the number of ‘A’ certificates being handed out to promos). The board is deliberating on the issue of internet censorship,” says Censor Board chief Leela Samson.
Earlier, films such as Murder 2, Dirty Picture, Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji, Harud and Hate Story also faced promo hiccups due to censorship.
There are 3 cuts for the film’s promos, all tweaked as per its markets — Indian theatres, overseas (12 yrs and above in UK) and the ‘adult’ version online
While the TV trailers of the ‘adult comedy’ have been snipped and cleaned up, it is the online uncensored promos with double-meaning gags that are a superhit
After the promos were given an A-rating by censors, maker Pooja Bhatt lashed out, “What about all sorts of double standards dished out under the guise of ‘family entertainers’?”
