With a career spanning almost three decades and nearly 400 films, actor Anupam Kher, 56, is one of the most versatile actors in the industry today. But what sets him apart is his continued enthusiasm for cinema.

Talking about his just released movie, Havai Dada, Kher, who co-produced it with filmmaker Satish Kaushik, says, “The film explores the relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter. I play the grandfather whose dream is to go on an airplane journey. It is a sensitive yet funny story about small time aspirations ... The grandfather makes a paper plane with an e-ticket that has been given to him and flies it. He represents a section of Indians who’ve never flied in a plane. This is one of my finest performances so far.”

Interestingly, the film will be telecast on UTV Movies on September 25, within a fortnight of its theatrical release. So, is this film meant only for kids? Kher says, “It’s not a children’s film at all. It is a human story that I am very proud of.” The film marks the return of veteran actor Tanuja who plays Kher’s wife in the film. “Working with a natural actor like Tanuja is always a pleasure. She has always been a favourite,” he says.

Talking about his new Hollywood project, Breakaway, Kher says, “Breakaway (titled Speedy Singh in Hindi) is Akshay Kumar’s first Indo-Canadian venture. I’ve played the role of a dad many times before. But the father that you will see in this film is one I’ve seen not only in India, but in Canada, China and Japan. The movie explores the relationship between immigrant parents and their kids.”

Commenting on his journey so far, Kher says, “The 29 years of my being in the industry have been really exciting and I hope the excitement continues.”
