Starkid on the block: Priyank Sharma
In the second of our six-part series on lesser known star kids, actor Padmini Kolhapure reveals all about her actor-to-be sonbollywood Updated: Jan 29, 2013 02:31 IST
"Priyank always wanted to become an actor. He was sure about it since he was a child and when other kids his age thought about becoming doctors or engineers or scientists," Kolhapure, 47, tells us, while adding, "But it has nothing to do with me being an actor or his father being a producer. We never exposed him to this life. His upbringing has been very typical and not that of a kid from a Bollywood family."
Perhaps that is the reason why the youngster is preparing himself with hands-on experience before he gets his big break. Having done his majors in English Honours from Mumbai, he has done an acting course from The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York, and is assisting filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi since the last two-and-half years.
Currently involved with Santoshi’s Phata Poster Nikla Hero, he is waiting for the right script to come through. "He has been offered films since he was 14-years-old, but he has not done anything, He is just waiting to come out with a bang. On the home front too, we haven’t blocked our minds to launch him, but only when we have the right script," says Kolhapure.
As far as his acting skills are concerned, his mother thinks, “He needs to work on himself like every actor and I think in a year, he will be ready. We are very critical parents. We have never praised him to the skies. He knows that it’s not easy to become an actor and a star.”
However, she does feel that he has the insight of a director. “Priyank loves watching movies. He watches every film under the sun and scrutinises it. I keep telling him that he’ll make a very good director, but he is only focussed towards acting right now,” says Kolhapure.
Film historian SMM Ausaja thinks the soon-to-be-actor has a good chance. “Priyank has the advantage of celebrity parents. But then, he will also face high expectations. But Padmini must have given him tips for sure,” he says.
Meet the parents
Priyank is the only son of 1980s actor Padmini Kolhapure and producer Tutu Sharma. While his mother is known for her power-packed performances in films such as Prem Rog, Vidhaata, Souten, Woh Saat Din, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, her husband has produced entertainers such as Gharwali Baharwali, Paanch, Rajkumar, Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karen and Tera Kya Hoga Johnny to name a few. The couple tied the knot after Sharma cast her in the film Aisa Pyar Kahan in the year 1986.
