Filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who is helming the biopic on late Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, has said that his find, Anurag Sinha, will play the title role, though even Amitabh Bachchan was approached with the script.

The filmmaker also wants to cast Sonakshi Sinha as Sarabjit’s sister, Dalbir Kaur. The film, ‘Sarabjit’, is written by Rajesh Beri and will be directed by Ishwar Singh Muchhal.

Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, died on May 2 as a result of an attack in jail. Subhash Ghai, who has permissions from Sarabjit’s family to make the biopic, says his is an extraordinary tale of determination but the 22-year struggle of his sister for his freedom is more inspirational.

Anurag Sinha is the actor Ghai introduced in the movie "Black & While". Sarabjit was convicted of involvement in the 1990 serial bomb blasts in Lahore and Faisalabad that had killed 14 people. In Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail on April 26, his inmates attacked him with bricks and plates and the injuries led to his death.

Speaking in Amritsar, Sarabjit’s family appreciated that Ghai had even considered a legendary actor. “I was aware of Ghai’s biopic proposal but I had no idea that he had approached Amitabh Bachchan,” said Dalbir Kaur. Even Swapandeep Kaur, daughter of Sarabjit Singh, said Bachchan’s involvement and international fame would have helped.
