Having rolled out nine Rs 100 crore earners last year, Bollywood seems to have entered a comfort zone, say experts, as the only movie to have entered the coveted club so far is the multi-starrer Race 2, and that too by a narrow margin.
"The only movie to have managed to enter the Rs 100 crore club so far this year is Race 2, and there hasn't really been any good, big ticket, multi-starrer flick that has released so far to amass that much. But our hopes are high. May end onwards, we should have films claiming the crown," says trade guru Taran Adarsh.
Distributor Joginder Mahajan, however, feels that the industry has become complacent after last year's good score. "Bollywood is not taking business seriously and has entered into a comfort zone." He adds, "Producers should not forget that film business is volatile and unpredictable. If this goes on, how are we even going to meet the gross collections of 2012 that crossed Rs 3000 crore?"The industry has released over 50 movies by now, i.e., the middle of the second quarter, and experts are pinning their hopes on A-lister films Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Dhoom 3, Krrish 3, Chennai Express, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Bullet Raja and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2. So far, only the May 3 release Shootout at Wadala, which has crossed Rs 45 cr in its initial week, is being looked upon as a potential 100-crore earner. "There has been a dearth of good content ... also, the business has been dull thanks to exams, the domestic T20 cricket league and vacations," says trade analyst Atul Mohan.
