Hitchens' widow Carol Blue accepted the award on behalf of her husband, reports The Telegraph.

The writer's last book, Arguably, failed to make it to the shortlist.

However, Toby Harnden's book about the death of a British officer in Afghanistan, Dead Men Risen, took the Orwell prize.

The award-winning book was published in an edited format after the first print was destroyed by the Ministry of Defence.
