Handicrafts may seem to be a pale topic for a children's book but if done nicely the book can surely be a master piece. Handmade in India is one such example.
Handmade in India is a pictographic travelogue of Olivia Fraser. As its title suggests, the book describes various handicrafts produced from different parts of India. It is a compilation of painter Olivia Fraser's experiences in India. Fraser has traveled all over India and she has been a regular visitor to the sub-continent for the past 10 years. Fraser has a good understanding of India's heritage and culture, which is evident from the book.
The book begins with a small note on Indian geography. The book doesn't have an index table but that is not handicap for this beautiful presentation. In the later pages Fraser goes on to describe various Indian handicrafts, tools employed to make these crafts and some small-time occupations as well. Fraser's description is supplemented with her beautiful drawings. In fact the back cover the book carries a small painting of Frasier.
Fraser is an excellent painter without doubt. And she scores on the text too. She has written a book in a conversational manner, it is as if she is talking to her readers. Fraser has drawn beautiful patterns on bright colours. Pratham books, the publishers, have also done a great job with the production. Overall, this book is a must-have in a kiddie library.
