Twice as adventurous
The Wise Man's Fear
Rejoice all you Kvothe-the-charming-dragon-slayer chums; the second (fat) installment of the three-volume Kingkiller Chronicle series is finally out. Kvothe is forced to leave the University as the tale begins. He lands in the kingdom of Vintas and gets embroiled in many problems. He explores new cultures, falls in love, even makes love and takes his search for answers to the questions that have hounded him since the first book, to the next level. The book's packed with wit and interesting observations ("It's the questions we can't answer that teach us the most"), and great storytelling by Patrick Rothfuss makes us eagerly await the final installment.

Kashmiri Cuisine: Through the Ages
Rs495, pp 143
Any food, apart from the sensory pleasure it affords and the cultural richness it illustrates, is also evocative of memories. The same is true of Sarla Razdan's book, which goes beyond being a mere inventory of Kashmiri cuisine. Delightful, authentic recipes from the meat-heavy diet are interspersed with pictures that depict the Valley in its diversity. Low calorie food also gets attention. Razdan’s memories, of the kabargah served in weddings or the sehri consumed during Ramzan, focus on aspects of Kashmiri life now barely discussed. Overall, a wholesome treat.
Pain in its many forms

Like there are role models, there are anti-role models — people you look up to only to ensure you never become like them. Rohit Gore's Sameer Sathe, or Sam for the hipper lot, is one such soul. Not only is he prone to accidents — "We all have accidents. What made my case unique was that I had an accident every year" — but he is also a Loser in the matters of heart: he has had seven failed relationships. But when the going gets really tough — with a prediction that Sam won't survive his next 'annual accident' — the tough-lucked Sam gets going for lack of options. He must chase all his seven ex-es, as one of them alone can save his life. Talk about the pains of growing up!
