Sensex jumps 261 points, Nifty tops 10,600 at close

The BSE Sensex closed 261.76 points or 0.76% higher at 34,924.87 on Friday, while the broader NSE Nifty topped 10,600 to close 91.30 points or 0.87% higher at 10,605.15.

The BSE Sensex zoomed over 260 points on Friday, extending Thursday’s rally on robust buying in IT, energy and banking stocks amid unabated purchases by domestic institutional investors.

The 30-share gauge closed 261.76 points or 0.76% higher at 34,924.87 on Friday, while the broader NSE Nifty topped 10,600 to close 91.30 points or 0.87% higher at 10,605.15.

The index had gained 318.20 points in the previous session.

Major gainers were ONGC, Tata Steel, Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, Adani Ports, Axis Bank and Hero MotoCorp, rising up to 4.59%.

State-owned oil companies IOC, OIL and BPCL recovered after a sharp decline on Thursday.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 1,480.51, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 701.93 crore on Thursday, as per provisional data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.30% lower in Thursday’s trade on a sharp decline in energy-related shares.
