A agricultural price panel has recommended the increase and the federal cabinet will take a decision, the paper said, quoting an unnamed food ministry official.

Sugar output in India, the world's top producer after Brazil, fell 44 per cent to 14.7 million tonnes last year as the worst monsoon in over three decades trimmed cane output.

The sugar season runs from October to September.
