Markets plummet in early trade

Indian equities markets fell precipitiously early today, with a key index shedding more than yesterday's gains to go 4.01 per cent lower than its previous close.

Indian equities markets fell precipitiously early on Thursday, with a key index shedding more than Wednesday's gains to go 4.01 per cent lower than its previous close.

About 15 minutes into trading on Thursday, the sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was at 8,994.46 points, a fall of 376.03 points or 4.01 per cent from its previous close of 9,370.49 points. It had opened at 9,098.08.

The broader S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) acted likewise and was at 2,717.35 points at the same time, 4.16 per cent lower than Wednesday's close of 2,835.30.

The BSE midcap and smallcap indices were also trading below Wednesday's close.
