Reliance Power on Monday kicked off power generation at its coal-based Rosa Power Project at Rosa, Shahjahanpur in UP.

The plant was commissioned with a power-production of around 20 MW. It would start generating 300 MW power by the end of January 2010 after a brief stabilisation period.
“The plant will generate an additional 300 MW by the end of March 2010, marking the completion of Phase-I of our 600 MW power production at Rosa Project,” said JP Chalasani chief executive officer Reliance Power. He added that Phase-II of the project would be completed by March 2012, taking total power generation to 1200 MW.
Chalsani added the company is aiming to commission a total of 3120 MW power generations by March 2012. “The 1200 MW power generation forms a part of this capacity. The others include 1320 MW at Sasan and 600 MW at Nagpur.”
The Rosa Power Project would entail a total investment of Rs 6,000 crore and is divided into two phases of 600 MW each. The company has already invested around Rs 2000 crore till date.
Reliance Power has already signed a PPA (power purchase agreement) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd and expects to generate tariffs of around Rs 2.30 to Rs 2.50 per unit. After completion of the project the company would sell around 300 MW power on a merchant basis to the private bidders. “We expect to get around Rs 4 to 5 per unit through this initiative,” Chalsani told Hindustan Times.
Further dispelling doubts about the delay in Dadri project Chalsani said that the project would take off ‘soon’. “Contrary to popular belief the issue at Dadri is more about gas and the Dadri project will remain a gas-based plant rather than being converted to a coal-based power project,” he said.
