Forex traders said that apart from dollar's weakness against other Asian currencies, capital inflow into equities by foreign funds kept the rupee sentiment firm. However, demand for the American currency from importers capped its gains.

The rupee ended flat at Rs 44.34/35 a dollar in the previous session.

Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) index Sensex rose by 87.49 points to 19,959.64 in the opening trade.
