Sensex drops below 19K at intra-day

The 30-share index falls by nearly 280 points from record peak of over 19K at 18,777.75 at 1400 hours.

The benchmark Sensex fell by nearly 280 points from record peak of over 19,000 on the Bombay Stock Exchange in afternoon trade, following heavy profit selling by funds at existing higher levels.

The 30-share index, which had commenced the day on promising note by touching a record peak at 19,174.45 points, dipped by 279.92 points at 18,777.75 at 1400 hours following a steep fall in blue-chip stocks led by metal sector shares.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty lost 91.95 points at 5578.45, after touching the day's high of 5,708.35.

The metal sector suffered maximum loss, dropping by nearly 421.32 points at 15,796.62. The index had climbed maximum yesterday, rising by nearly 1,365 points, as the key index crossed 19,000 points level for the first time.
