SPH spokeswoman Chin Soo Fang said in a statement on Wednesday that the company documented use by Yahoo of 23 articles from SPH newspapers without permission over a 12-month period.

Yahoo Southeast Asia confirmed the litigation but declined further comment.

Yahoo on Wednesday posted on its website a story by its newsroom that cites Southeast Asia Managing Editor Alan Soon saying the company plans to "vigorously" defend itself against the suit.

SPH filed a writ of summons and statement of claim to the Singapore High Court on Friday.

SPH publishes 18 newspapers in four languages including its flagship Straits Times.
