Singur land for Rlys: Bengal moves SC

The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court to speed up the disposal of an appeal challenging the acquisition of around 1,000 acres of land in Singur originally meant for Tata Motors as the state has decided to transfer the land to Indian railways to build a passenger coach factory.

The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court to speed up the disposal of an appeal challenging the acquisition of around 1,000 acres of land in Singur originally meant for Tata Motors as the state has decided to transfer the land to Indian railways to build a passenger coach factory. A court bench has set February 5 as the date for hearing in the case.

A petition filed by Singur farmers sought to set aside a Calcutta High Court verdict of 2008 upholding the state government’s acquisition of land for the Tata project to build the ambitious small car Nano. The Tatas had moved the project Gujarat in the wake of farmer protests.
