Being the CEO of software giant Microsoft was beyond his wildest dreams, said Satya Nadella, while addressing a video conference on cloud computing organised by the company for its clients and staff on Thursday.
“Having grown up in India, the idea that I would have the opportunity to talk to all of you as the CEO of Microsoft was beyond my wildest dreams,” said Nadella. “Admittedly, my interests at that time were a bit more focused on cricket than technology.”
Nadella, Hyderabad-born engineer, took charge as Microsoft CEO early last month. He claimed that Windows Azure — Microsoft’s cloud service — is a platform for Indian developers and startups to bring their applications to markets worldwide.
“It helps Indian customers leapfrog to the cloud and accrue significant cost savings,” he said.
With competition from rivals Amazon and Google hotting up, Microsoft is stepping up its focus on cloud business in India. Client base is growing 200% and it is adding 2,000 new customers, every month, the company said.
The market for cloud service providers is expected to grow from $550 million in 2014 to $1.3 billion (about Rs. 8,000 crore) by 2017.
