A continuing slow down, a significant drop in the tourist inflow after 26/11 has not dented the India Tourism Development Corporation’s (ITDC)profits — Rs 30-crore in October–December quarter. Samiran Saha spoke to Rajiv Makin Director (Commercial and Marketing) ITDC. Excerpts:
How was the October-December quarter this financial year for ITDC, given the fact that travel and tourism sector has suffered badly because of the economic slow down and the terror attacks in Mumbai last November?
For ITDC, the last quarter has been good .The India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) registered a 5.84 per cent growth in net profit which stood at Rs 29.6 crore in the October-December quarter of the current fiscal. ITDC’s total earnings stood at Rs 324.9 crore during the April to December period, 2008-09 while it was Rs 311.27 crore in the same period of 2007-08.
How do you see ITDC performing in the next quarter given the fact that it has renovated its three properties in Delhi, namely Ashoka, Janpath and Samrat?
Next quarter we should be able to maintain our profits. We are hopeful of maintaining our growth trajectory as we did in the last quarter. Keeping the mind the Commonwealth Games in October 2010 we would be providing 800 rooms from three of our properties in Delhi, these have been fully renovated from internal resources.
What kind of a role would ITDC have in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games apart from providing hotel rooms?
ITDC will take furnish and maintain the “hotel apartments” that are being constructed at Vasant Kunj and Jasola by the Delhi Development Authority for the games. There are 3179 flats that would be given out to the teams visiting Delhi during the Commonwealth Games. ITDC has been mandated to furnish and maintain these flats for the duration of the games. These flats will be handed over to us in March next and returned to DDA after the games are over.
Which are the new restaurants ITDC is opening in the future?
In the next six months we will open a Jain food restaurant at the Ashoka rooftop. We have leased out space for a restaurant to actor Arjun Rampal and his associate and restaurateur KD Singh who will open European and Pan Asian cuisine restaurant in the next six months. A Mediterranean cuisine restaurant will also come up at Janpath.
