My LCD television set developed problems last month — half the screen showed white stripes. To cut the long story short, I am still wondering how to fix this as the warranty period is over.
Being a value-for-money person I weigh options carefully. I have been told that LCD sets have been phased out (by the big brands, definitely) and the new LED TVs of the same screen size cost a lot more than fixing the screen.
Being a digital product, as my repair guys explained, the basic combo is a flat screen with a motherboard — and being a delicate product, the entire screen probably needs replacement.
That sounds like a computer — and that’s what our new TVs really are. With smart TVs increasingly set to become the norm, this will become even more so.
And here is what you should worry about: with higher costs out there for fancier sets, make sure your warranty is extended if it can be. My TV has served me for five years so far.
But the point to note is that like computers, the new lot of TVs need tender loving care! The recent Delhi rains may have done my TV in.
A useful guide on eBay tells me: “Since climate controlled conditions are generally better for electronic devices, buy a dehumidifier to keep the environment dry and cool. Purchase the proper tools to clean it with, such as an appropriate cleanser and a soft cloth.”
I should have read this earlier.
