A closer look at the new Hyperion petrol engine

The run also served as the first real-world showcase for Tata’s new 1.5-litre Hyperion petrol engine. Engineers say it was designed to strike a balance, deliver strong efficiency without making the SUV feel strained or unrefined.

During the long-duration test, the engine’s torque-rich mid-range and updated combustion setup helped it maintain consistent fuel delivery. Reduced internal friction also played a role, allowing the Sierra to stay steady lap after lap.

Top speed also achieved alongside the test

In a separate exercise, also conducted at NATRAX, the Sierra reached a top speed of 222 km/h under monitored track conditions. This was part of a parallel evaluation carried out alongside the efficiency run to assess the upper limits of the new powertrain.

Tata Motors clarified that customer vehicles won’t go that fast. Production models will be electronically capped at 190 km/h as part of the company’s safety standards.

A reminder on real-world driving

While the record has added early buzz around the Sierra, Tata Motors stressed that trained professionals handled both tests in a controlled environment. The company urged owners not to attempt similar runs on public roads and to follow speed limits and general traffic rules.

On achieving this feat, Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, spoke, “Setting a national efficiency record so early in the Sierra’s journey is a proud moment for us. The Hyperion engine platform was built to push the boundaries of what petrol powertrains can achieve, and this milestone validates that effort. It strengthens the Sierra’s value proposition for customers and underlines TMPV’s commitment to bringing advanced, efficient and future-ready technologies to the market.”
