District and sessions judge SK Aggarwal on Saturday awarded life in jail to 28-year-old Vishal Sharma, a resident of SAS Nagar, for stabbing a 21-year-old man to death in an incident of road rage five years ago.
The case dates back to September 21, 2008, when, around 11.20pm, victim Nitin Bansal and his two friends were coming from the Sector-15 market in a sedan and stopped at the Sector 15-16 traffic lights while for the signal to turn green.
Convict Sharma, who was in an inebriated condition, got into an argument with the trio over honking while waiting for the green signal. The argument took a violent turn as Sharma took out a dagger from his car and stabbed Bansal in his waist and head, leaving him bleeding profusely. Bansal's friend Sidakjot Singh was also injured.
Bansal's other friend Rahul Bajaj, who was accompanying him and Sidakjot and on whose complaint the murder case was later registered, took both to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH) in Sector 16, from where Bansal was referred to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he was declared dead on arrival.
The court, while awarding Sharma a life term, also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him.
