Adviser holds meeting on preserving UT’s heritage

During the meeting, the issue of preservation and conservation of exposed RCC facades in City Centre, Sector 17, a heritage precinct, was discussed in details.

The importance of preserving the architectural character of t hi s impor tant area was highlighted and various methodologies for maintenance and upkeep of exposed facades were also deliberated by the present administrators and technical experts.

The committee also examined the proposal for a new building for the town planning departments of Punjab and Haryana and general offices of UT, Chandigarh, which will come up at the site of number 3 in Sector 18, Madhya Marg. The cost of the project is to be borne by Punjab and Haryana states and the building is to be executed through Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) after detailed discussions on the architectural and urban design aspects of the project was conceptually approved by the committee.

The department of science and technology, UT has framed a proposal for installation of solar photo voltaic power plants on the roof top of five government schools in the city which have been graded as heritage structures.

The committee also reviewed the external facades of the proposed Block-B of Chandigarh Housing Board building on Jan Marg in Sector 9, Chandigarh, which is coming up as a green building.

The earlier proposal was prepared as per the existing architectural controls applicable to this important avenue. However, the administrators and the technical experts were unanimous in their view that certain flexibility for incorporating the long term sustainability of the structure could be infused in the design in order to address modern day requirements.

The chief architect brought out that the Expert Heritage Committee report approved by the government of India too had recommended holistic review of the architectural controls. The design of the upcoming new building for UT offices on plot number7, Sector 9D, was also discussed in the same context.

The meet was attended by the home secretary-cum- secretary, local bodies, UT, Chandigarh, secretary, urban planning, chairman, Chandigarh Housing Board, commissioner, municipal corporation, chief engineer, UT , among others.

This committee has been set up on the directions of ministry of home affairs, government of India with an aim to ensure proper preservation, conservation and maintenance of the important public buildings identified by the expert committee, to take requisite steps for completion of incomplete projects in the original plan of the city and also declare heritage buildings and heritage zones and also to frame conservation guidelines and heritage regulations.
