Local police claimed to have solved a blind murder case of Nayagaon resident Lam Lakhan with the arrest of a 48-year-old acquaintance of the victim on Saturday.
Lam Lakhan alias Pujari's body bearing cuts and stab wounds was found in Mullanpur on July 13. Police, after registering the case had handed over the investigation to the Central Investigating Agency (CIA) who arrested Raj Singh for allegedly murdering Pujari.
Giving details about the motive behind the crime police said that Singh, who knew Pujari for a decade as both of them were AC repair mechanics, had developed a liking for the victim's wife. Police claimed that Singh decided to get rid of Pujari so that he could establish relations with his wife.
According to police, on July 12 Singh and Pujari were on their way to a temple in Mullanpur when the accused attacked Singh with a knife. After killing Pujari, Singh hid his body and went back home, Police claimed.
Senior superintended of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh said the accused had admitted to the crime and the police had recovered the weapon used and blood-soaked clothes from his possession.
The role of the victim's wife is also under scanner as it is yet to be established whether she knew about Singh's plan of killing her husband.
