The domestic help, her husband and two other kin arrested for the murder of a 66-year-old woman in Panchkula were remanded to five-day police custody on Sunday by a local court.
According to Sector-5 police station house officer (SHO) inspector Mukesh Kumar, the police are yet to ascertain the past record of the accused - maid Chintesh, her husband Suraj Pal, a labourer; her brother Ram Bahadur and cousin Gainda Raam - and have to recover incriminating material.
The victim was alone at home when she was murdered on Friday night as her son Rajinder was away to Dubai with his wife for the past week. Rajinder's daughter was with his in-laws in SAS Nagar. Devi's other son Ravinder lives in Canada. According to the police, the foursome had planned the murder for robbery ever since Rajinder and his wife had left.
Chintesh had been working in the house for about a year while Gainda and Bahadur arrived on Friday evening and first drugged the pet dog in milk. Around 9.30pm, Gainda, Bahadur and Suraj entered the room of Sushila, widow of an army officer. Chintesh helped them enter by knocking at the door, as Sushila never used to open the door for strangers. They asphyxiated Sushila with a towel, but during the struggle she left injury marks on the accused which also helped in nailing them. Contradictory statements of Chintesh, who tried to outwit the cops by calling the police herself, and her husband had first raised suspicion.
