A landlord and his wife were found strangled to death at different spots on the banks of two canals in Karnal district on Sunday.

While the body of Punjab Singh of Amupur village near Nissing in Karnal district was found near Indri, about 30 km from here, his wife Ramandeep Kaur's body was found near Butana.

The couple had gone missing under mysterious circumstances on Saturday evening.

The bodies did not have any injury marks and police suspected that the duo was strangulated.

Police said that preliminary investigations revealed that Punjab Singh had interests in real estate business and some property dispute might be behind the crime.

District police sources said that Kaur's body was spotted on Sunday morning on the bank of Sirsa branch canal near Butana. Soon another message flashed from Indri revealed that another body was located near Indri. Subsequently, the identities of the two deceased were known.

Punjab's brother Karnail Singh told police that his deceased brother and his wife had gone to purchase some medicines on Saturday evening but did not return. The family did not suspect anybody's involvement in the crime.

"Our worries were compounded when we found their mobile phones switched off. We immediately approached the police and were shocked to learn about the murders," said Karnail.
