The missing student has been identified as Tejasvi Arora, third-year student of civil engineering.

Arora is a resident of Sadar Bazar, Agra, in Uttar Pradesh.

The incident took place near Jyotisar on the Kurukshetra-Pehowa road.

Confirming the incident to the Hindustan Times, Kurukshetra deputy commissioner Mandeep Brar said rescue teams were deployed but the work was suspended due to night's darkness.

Brar said nearly four to five students had entered canal waters in the evening and four had slipped into it.

While three managed to come out of the flowing water, Arora was reported to be missing. "Search and rescue operation would resume in the morning," the deputy commissioner added.

Meanwhile, NIT director Anand Mohan, who reached the spot after receiving the information, told reporters that the students were consuming liquor near the canal.
