A provision of `2 crore is made in this year’s budget for the free bicycle scheme, stated department officials.

This scheme was announced by UT administrator Shivraj Patil in last year’s Independence Day speech but had not been implemented all this while.

DPI (s) Kamlesh Kumar however assured that the scheme would soon be floated and those eligible will be provided free bicycles.

The Class 11 admissions for the current academic session just got over. The department will soon initiate the survey to identify the beneficiaries and accordingly provide them bicycles.

He explained that only girls belonging to priority households identified under the National Food Security Act, 2013, will be eligible for this scheme. The department of Food and Supplies had identified priority households before the implementation of the National Food Security Act in the city.

He said that the department had sufficient funds as there was a provision of `2 crore to support this scheme. “The department is thinking of extending the scheme to Class 12 girls too, but we are still waiting for a final confirmation,” he added.
