From now, courts to dispose of traffic challanas on Sundays
Beginning today, judicial magistrates at Chandigarh district courts would hold courts on Sundays as well. This is being done in compliance with a Punjab and Haryana high court (HC) direction, asking magistrates to hold special sittings to reduce the pendency of cases in lower courts.

Beginning today, judicial magistrates at Chandigarh district courts would hold courts on Sundays as well.
This is being done in compliance with a Punjab and Haryana high court (HC) direction, asking magistrates to hold special sittings to reduce the pendency of cases in lower courts. The special sittings, which will continue till November 23, are aimed at disposing of cases pertaining to traffic violations.
Data shows that 65,000 cases are pending in lower courts in the city. Of this, nearly 15,000 cases are of traffic violations.
The decision was taken in a recent meeting of the HC that was attended by two HC judges, a district and sessions judge of Chandigarh and a member of UT legal services.
