Illegal paying guest accommodations, just like SAS Nagar town, are flourishing in Kharar sub-division, too. While there are about 250 paying guest accommodations operating in Kharar, not even one is registered.
Even as police began cracking down against persons keeping paying guest without getting their mandatory verification done in SAS Nagar town, the authorities in Kharar are yet to swing into action.
Sources revealed that about 250 paying guest accommodations were operating in Kharar sub-division and a large number of students were staying there owing to low rentals as compared to SAS Nagar town. However, not even a single PG is registered with authorities.
The sources added that a large number of PG accommodations were being operated in Garden Colony of Khanpur village, Dashmesh Nagar, Ranjeet Nagar, Mandher Nagar, Santé Majra Colony, Shivjot Enclave, Guru Teg Bahadur Colony, Model Town, Darpan Society and Gillco Valley without any knowledge of the authorities.
Kharar municipal council executive officer SS Sidhu, when contacted, said, “Not even single PG is registered with us. As of now, we are doing a survey to earmark where all PGs are being run. In about week's time, the survey would be over and we would send the list to the police for further action."
Kharar police wakes up on issue
After the crackdown in SAS Nagar by the police authorities, the counterparts in Kharar sub-division have woken up on the issue. The police are making announcements in different wards and areas in Khararm asking residents to get the tenant verification done and get their PGs registered.
Police authorities said they had given a week's time to all residents to get the registration done or face action.
“Directions have been issued to all SHOs in the subdivision to create awareness about tenant verification. The residents would be given a week's time to get the mandatory verifications done. In case people fail to get their tenants verified action would be taken and cases would be registered against them in the Kharar subdivision too,” said Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, SSP SAS Nagar.
SAS Nagar PG owners protest crackdown
Irked over crack down by police, PG owners on Monday held a meeting in phase 7 of SAS Nagar.
The PG owners alleged that despite applying for registration, the GMADA has failed to register them. As per terms and condition of GMADA, the PG owners needs to get two neighbours to state that they do not have any problem with the operating PG. Only after this undertaking by two neighbours, GMADA would consider giving permission to operate PG.
Sanjay Bagga, one of the PG owner said that they were ready to comply with all the terms and conditions but why would anyone give undertaking for them.
Jasvir Kaur, who too runs a PG, said her family was making a living by keeping PGs. She said GMDA should be more liberal in giving permission to operate PG at least to those people who were complying with all the rules and regulation laid down by the authority.
Three more owners booked
Police have booked four PG owners in different cases registered in various police stations Charanjeet Singh of Kumbra, Balwinder Singh, a resident of phase 11, and Sohana resident Mandeep Singh were booked by the police for failing to get the mandatory registration of tenants done. All these persons were running PGs but failed to provide identity proofs of the persons staying as tenants.
