The discoms have proposed two surcharges amounting to an increase of Rs 1.7 per unit in power rates.

"The proposed hike will put an additional burden of more than Rs 5,700 crore on consumers," INLD state president Ashok Arora said in a release.

Ellanabad legislator Abhey Chautala said, "The state government is burdening people with increase in rates, while the power companies are making losses because of their internal problems such as corruption, incompetence and mismanagement."

INLD leaders said that since April 2012, the government had raised power rates thrice.
