The Rupnagar police claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of robbers by arresting its eight members and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession on Thursday.
While addressing a press conference, Rupnagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ravcharan Singh Brar said, "We have arrested gang leader Salesh Kumar and his accomplices Ajit Singh, Ashish Kumar, Yogesh Kumar, Banti Singh, Ramu, Joti Parsad and Lokesh Kumar all residents of Adarsh Colony, Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh)."
Brar added that Rupnagar superintendent of police (SP) (D) DS Mann, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Harbir Singh Atwal, Rupnagar city station house officer (SHO) Manvir Singh Bajwa and CIA staff in-charge Gurdeep Singh played an important role in busting the gang.
Police have recovered three 303 bore pistols along with six live cartridges, four stolen motorcycles along with fake registration certificates, six mobiles with sim cards issued with fake ID proof, a knife, a sickle, two iron rods and equipments used for breaking open the boots of the vehicles.
"The arrested members of the gang had confessed their involvement in 22 incidents of crimes, including eight in Gujarat,six in Uttar Pradesh, five in Rupnagar, one each in SAS Nagar, Hoshiarpur and Fatehgarh Sahib districts involving robberies of `28 lakh.
He adde that some of the arrested gang members were also involved in the incident that took place at filling station on College Road, Rupnagar, on January 15 in which two motorcycle-borne persons had robbed off a man of `2 lakhs.
"The gang was planning a second big strike in Rupnagar. However, they could not succeed in their designs and we managed to bust the gang."
Earlier, the gang used to travel on train to Moradabad after committing crimes. However, now they had changed their modus operandi and used motor bikes to commit crimes, said Brar.
He added that the gang members had mainly committed robberies outside banks and completed their task within 15 seconds. The gang members used to observe the transactions being made in the banks by the people and loot the cash from the people who come out of the banks after withdrawing the same from the banks.
Besides, this they also presented themselves as beggers at traffic lights and observe the bags lying in the cars and other vehicles .They used to take away theses bags, which could have cash in them, by diverting the attention of the occupants of the vehicles.
He said a case under Sections 399,402 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered against them at Rupnagar city police station.
The accused were produced in a local court on Thursday which sent them to police custody till January 27.
Brar said more revelations were expected during the interrogation of the arrested gang members and expressed the hope that remaining eight members of the gang would also be arrested soon.
