District and sessions judge SK Aggarwal awarded life imprisonment to a Mauli Jagran resident for stabbing his wife to death following an argument when she objected to his drinking, on Monday.
"The convict claimed his wife's life in a fit of rage by killing her brutally," observed the court.
However, it did not find the murder to be categorized as rarest of rare. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on convict Raj Kumar.
UT police had booked Raj Kumar on June 4, 2014, when they received information that a 28-year-old woman, Reeta, had been attacked at her house in Mauli Jagran. The police rushed to the spot and the victim was shifted to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The prosecution stated that Reeta was stabbed to death by her drunkard husband in a fit of rage.
Reeta's father Ram had lodged a formal complaint with the police stating that his daughter Reeta was married to Raj Kumar, a painter by profession, eight years ago and her husband used to beat her often. He also beat her 20 days prior to the incident and after which she had come to reside with him (her father).
Reeta used to work in a factory in Dera Bassi and on that particular day, Rajkumar had reached there and dragged her to his house. Reeta's father heard about the incident and rushed to his daughter's house and saw that the door was open. He went inside and witnessed Rajkumar stab his daughter. He stabbed her near the ear giving her fatal injuries and fled from the spot. Reeta sustained a deep cut under her left ear and was rushed to PGI where she succumbed to her injury. The accused was later arrested.
The couple has two children, five-year-old Aryan and three-year-old Vikas. Reeta married Raj Kumar eight years ago against the wishes of their families.
