The two underpasses will come up at ISBT-17 roundabout and Aroma light point in Sector 22.

Pardeep Chhabra, chairman of the committee, said: "The drawings have been finalised and have been sent to UT administration for final approval. Once approved, they will be placed in the MC House with estimate. We are hopeful of beginning the work on the two underpasses by January."

The civic body, while giving the presentation on underpasses recently, said that underpasses would be constructed under the roundabouts so that traffic movement did not get affected. Nearly 1.27 lakh vehicles pass the roundabout near ISBT in Sector 17 daily.

The project has been hanging fire for the past seven years as the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) failed to start work on it despite having funds.

In November last year, UT administrator Shivraj V Patil had entrusted MC with constructing eight underpasses in various parts of the city to ease traffic congestion.

In 2007, UT administration had proposed underpasses at ISBT-17, Tribune Chowk, UT Press Chowk, Transport Chowk, Piccadily Chowk, Kisan Bhawan, Matka Chowk and Cricket Stadium Chowk in Sector 16 and Aroma light points in Sector 22.
