A gang of snatchers that offers lifts to unsuspecting elderly women in a car and then snatches their gold jewellery is active in the town and its periphery, police said here on Sunday.
While two such incidents were reported to the police on Sunday, one was reported on Saturday. In all the cases, the victims were in their 50s and 60s, and their gold bangles were snatched once they had accepted the lift offer and were in the car.
Police suspect all the three incidents to be connected, though are yet to register cases. Police are yet to zero-in on the accused as the victims were neither able to identify the make of the cars, nor were they able to note down their registration numbers.
In the incidents that took place on Sunday, the victims were offered a lift by two women sitting in the backseat of cars being driven by a chauffeur.
In the first incident, Phase 9 resident Satya Devi, 55, was offered a lift outside a Jain temple in Phase 1 here. Devi accepted the offer and some minutes after she sat in the car, the two women snatched the gold bangles worn by her.
In the second incident, Dharamjeet Kaur, 62, of Sector 56 went to pay obeisance at a gurdwara in Phase 1, but when she reached near the Jain temple, two women offered her a lift in a car and snatched two gold bangles from her a while after she sat in the car.
Speaking to HT, superintendent of police (city) Swarndeep Singh said they were investigating into the snatching incidents. “Residents should be aware of unscrupulous elements who offer lifts. We urge women to note down the registration numbers of vehicles before planning to hitch a lift,” he said. “This would help us track down the accused.
In the snatching on Saturday, the victim, Harjeet Kaur of Sohana village, was in her late 50s. She had gone to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Sohana when two women offered her a lift. In this case, the victim refused, but was pulled into the car, and her gold bangles were snatched. Details are awaited as the police are yet to register cases.
