Congress MLA Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi on Monday demanded that the Centre should bestow the Bharat Ratna on freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh, who had avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by shooting dead British officer Michael O’Dwyer. Rana Sodhi appealed to the Centre to consider the martyr for the award.

The MLA was reacting to the talk about conferring the Bharat Ratna on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He lamented that the central government did not have a uniform policy for conferring the highest civilian award and other awards on national heroes. Rather, it is decided on a pick-and-choose basis by the parties in power, he claimed.
