Police said the couple’s relationship was under strain, as she suspected her husband of having an illicit relationship with other woman in the village. Police said the deceased’s family told police that even neighbours and relatives had tried to mediate and resolve their issue, but to no avail.

The victim’s brother Davinder Singh of Karhali Sahib village told police that Manpreet had started abusing his sister mentally and physically seven months ago. “I received a phone call from Manpreet on Thursday saying that she had fallen unconscious,” he added.

Investigation officer Jarnail Singh said that Davinder told Manpreet to take her to the hospital but when he reached their home, she was lying on the bed with strangulation marks on her neck. “When he saw the marks, the complainant informed the police. However, the accused managed to flee before the police reached the spot,” the IO said.

A case was registered against the accused under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
