Member of Parliament (MP) from Patiala, Preneet Kaur, along with officials of the municipal corporation, district administration and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) participated in the drive to ban single-use plastic (SUP) under the ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ campaign.

Preneet, along with the officials, collected plastic waste from roadsides. She urged the residents to participate in the drive and help in making their surroundings plastic-free.

The dignitaries also distributed special jute bags, being prepared by the Punjab Pollution Control Board, among public.

Addressing the gathering, Preneet said that it is the responsibility of residents as much as it is of the officials concerned to contribute in cleaning the environment and stopping the use of plastic, especially the single-use type.

“Patialvis should shun use of polythene bags,” she said.

“Moreover, in the wake of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, people should follow his teachings. He had always spread the message of keeping the environment clean,” the Patiala MP further added.

Patiala mayor Sanjeev Sharma Bittu said that the amount of plastic being used can be gauged from the fact that of total 230 tonne garbage collected on daily-basis in Patiala, 80 tonne is plastic and polythene waste.
