Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) has decided to continue the last fiscal's tariff structure from April 1 until the tariff order for the financial year 2015-16 is released.

The continuing structure came into effect on August 22 last year. Under the Electricity Act, 2003, the tariff-revision process should start on November 30 and be announced in 120 days, by March 31. Sources in the PSERC say the state government's delaying the announcement of subsidy for free electricity to the agriculture sector has held up tariff order.

Thus, the tariff for the financial year ending March 31 will continue to apply from April 1 until fresh tariff is announced. Last year, the PSERC imposed an average hike of 2.74% on different consumer sections. The commission has also ordered that the time of day (ToD) tariff applicable to large supply and medium supply industrial category consumers up to March 31, 2015, would not apply for two months from April 1 to May 31.

The peak-load exemption charges would be levied as approved by the PSERC in the tariff order for the previous year. Further, the peak load hours would not be more than three (between 6pm and 10pm), depending upon seasons.
