Punjab unit of Congress appears to be taking a different stand than its central leadership on the issue of clemency to Balwant Singh Rajoana, facing the gallows in the case of former chief minister Beant Singh's assassination.
State Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Kumar Jakhar said the party supported the stand taken by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for according clemency to Rajoana, who is scheduled to be hanged on March 31.
"If Badal works in the interests of Punjab to ensure peace and communal harmony, Punjab unit of the Congress will support him," he said. He, however, said that the state unit of the Congress is of the firm opinion that no party should take political mileage from Rajaona row.
This was disapproved by central leadership of the Congress on Monday with its spokesman Abhishek Singhvi saying that "there is no role given to the assembly and this (hanging of Rajoana) is a culmination of the legal process. These issues proceed under a legal and constitutional process and reach up to a certain point."
He said, "Whatever any assembly may say, it cannot have any legal or constitutional impact."
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh had also assured of support and cooperation to the state government, whether legal or by way of making an appeal to the President in this regard.
The family of the slain Punjab chief minister has also favoured clemency for Rajoana.
