Presiding over a meeting of the urban development department, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said there were different sets of building bylaws for different buildings, causing confusion among developers.

"There are separate sets of building bylaws for the industry, IT sector, municipal areas, areas falling under local bodies and areas falling under urban development bodies," Sukhbir pointed out, adding that he had asked the urban development authorities to come out with a model set of building bylaws which would be applicable to all buildings, whether industrial, commercial, IT sector or residential.

"Uniform bylaws for the entire state is a major administrative reform initiative by the SAD-BJP government to check harassment of builders as well as the public," he said, adding that the simplification would also result in early clearance of building plans submitted by people.

Sukhbir said he had separately ordered decentralisation of the building plan approval system to encourage people to opt for a sanctioned plan and ensure uniform development of urban areas.
